never pass a pisser, never trust a fart, never waste a stiffy.
The only campsite we pre-booked from England was for our visit to Strasbourg and we were due there on Thursday 31st July.
However, when we woke on Wednesday (a tad the worse for wear but at least Dave’s expensive shirts and my pull-string bag – containing all our worldly possessions – both made it back safely 😅) we decided we’d like to try & head there a day early.
I rang to check but sadly (even though the man spoke no English at all) I understood the word “complet” – FULL 😞
So we headed to a site about halfway there – Camping Vosigna – where the landscape had turned more Swiss/German-looking with its green forest-covered hills and wooden sloping-roofed houses…
Also – as a “treat” for Dave 😐 – on the way – I got my recorder out and we played “Name That Tune” (WELL, I played tunes and Dave looked vague so I had to give him clues 😂🎵)
Back in the square, we got a prime seat and ordered 2 x IRISH coffees (so much for sobering up !!!). The menu gave a choice of various spirits so we asked the waitress to have our’s with Bailey’s.
When she came back, yes there were 2 x Irish coffees but also 2 x (tiny) measures of Bailey’s in crystal glasses – and she had the nerve to charge us €22 (for the Irish Coffees.- fine) but a further €16 for the 2 x TINY Bailey’s !!!
I should have said something – but I’m English – and didn’t…
But GOSH those coffees were STRONG !!! So much for sobering us up… I took a photo but somehow (as you will see below) I am in focus but Dave & the coffees are not…
Anyway the show started – at dot on 10:45pm – and it was well worth the wait !!! My photos don’t really do it justice but if you have a moment – watch Dave’s video – and it you are ever in Nancy between March and September, I can highly recommend it !!!
Dave fancied steak so we perused the menus on one of the main eatery-streets and decided upon this really cute place “Le Bouche A Oreille” (which translates to “Word of Mouth”). It had chairs, dolls, pictures, etc. hung from the ceiling and every bit of wall was covered with something !!!
AND they served Dave’s beer in my FAVOURITE glass (I LUV those glasses that have chunky stems 🍸!!!)
We decided on a raclette of steak to share accompanied by these gorgeous dauphoise-type potatoes with bacon & cheese – absolutely delicious and even with (another 🥴) three beers and wines – the total bill was only €84 !!! The little waitress was gorgeous, was the only person serving and worked so hard but you still felt as though you were getting 100% attention from her so of course we rounded the bill up to €100…
And at some point in the evening Dave snapped me on my phone (it must have during one of his WC-visits !!!) – sadly we forgot to ask the waitress to take a pic of us with the food.
At that point, I said we’d had a lot to drink and that we should now have a coffee – so we proceeded back to Place Stanislas to get a good seat for the light show…
We had a mooch around the shops and Dave bought a couple of designer shirts (one navy blue patterned and one white (with a little patterned adornments and LUVLEY silver buttons !!!). It’s our 29th wedding 💒 anniversary on Sunday so he’ll probably wear one then & I’ll take a pic…
As there was a light show (EVERY night between March & September in Place Stanislas and is the reason I decided we needed to visit Nancy) at 10:45pm, it seemed like a REALLY long time until then – even with dinner – so we WERE considering coming back to The Van…
But we wouldn’t have made it out again…
So – like the real troupers that we are (😂) we decided that the only way we could stay out until that time – was to go for another drink…
We opted for a people-watching “stay-in-town” corner bar – full of locals putting the world to rights – and no wasps – whilst we basked in the last of the sun. 😎 and managed another couple of rounds…
Place Stanislas leads through to Parque de la Pépinière so after we had finished our wine and beer, we had a wander…
To say it was in the middle of the city, it was vast and housed an 18 hole mini-golf ⛳️ course (which Dave wouldn’t play with me 😔), a children’s play area, an auditorium for concerts and – of course a snack-bar which we ended up visiting…
I had a vanilla ice-cream and Dave had a Gaufre Chocolate Chaud (i.e. a waffle with warm chocolate sauce) – but there was no cutlery !!! They just bobbed it on a piece of greaseproof paper on a tray…
Right in the middle of the square is a statue of Stanislas Leszczynski, King of Poland 🇵🇱 and Duke of Lorraine (Nancy is famous for it’s Quiche Lorraine 😋 !!!) – he was responsible for the design of this beautiful square ❤️
As it says on the tin (!!!) the first pic is of the City Gates and the second is us partaking of a beverage at one of the bars lining the square. The building behind us is the Opera House…
It was idyllic – apart from the wasps – who were pretty annoying and kept bringing their mates to see us !!! 🐝
So this is the fountain in one of the other corners of the square and also the impressive Hotel De Ville. The square also houses the Opera House, the Museum De Beau Arts (which was closed) and then bars and restaurants – to sit and people-watch…
The Hotel De Ville
And the side road opposite the cathedral led us to Place Stanislas – and oh my goodness – it’s BEAUTIFUL ❤️
The iron gates painted in black and gold at the four corners of the square are just exquisite !!!
And there are lovely fountains accompanying two corners of the square…
Even the street lamps have been decorated in the same design…
